What We Actually Need From You
People arrive braced for an interrogation and are surprised by how short the list is. An auto insurance application in California is built around identifying a driver, identifying a vehicle, and knowing where the vehicle sleeps. Most of the documents you were worried about never come up.
The things that genuinely matter
- A driver's license number. This is the important one. It is how the carrier pulls a driving record, and a driving safety record is the first-ranked rating factor under Insurance Code section 1861.02(a). A license issued under Vehicle Code section 12801.9 has a license number like any other.
- Your name and date of birth, spelled and dated exactly as they appear on that license.
- The vehicle — year, make, model, trim, and ideally the VIN, which is on the registration and on the dashboard where it meets the windshield.
- The garaging address — where the car actually sits overnight.
- Annual mileage, honestly estimated. It is the second-ranked rating factor in the same statute, so it genuinely moves the number.
- Everyone in the household who drives the car.
The Social Security number question
Some carrier applications have a field for one. Some accept an ITIN there instead. Some ask for neither and work from the license number alone. Practice differs by company, which is a real argument for going through an agency that can start at a company whose application fits what you have rather than one that will stall on it.
You do not need a Social Security number to buy auto insurance in California. If a website tells you otherwise, what it means is that that website's form requires one.
What nobody needs
Your utility bills, your lease, your consular card, your tax returns. Those belong to the DMV's residency and identity showing, not to an insurance application. We are not a second DMV and we do not build a file of your documents.
Photo identification sometimes comes up when you sign in person, in the ordinary way it does at any business. That is a formality, not an investigation.
Two things worth volunteering
First, if you have never held insurance in the United States, say so plainly rather than guessing at an answer to "who is your current carrier". Insurance Code section 1861.02(c) provides that the absence of prior automobile insurance coverage, in and of itself, is not a criterion for eligibility for a Good Driver Discount policy or generally for rates, premiums or insurability. Being straightforward about it costs you nothing that the law allows to be charged.
Second, tell us if your name is spelled differently on different documents. That is fixable in advance and painful to discover during a claim.
What you get back
When the policy issues you receive a declarations page and an insurance card, and both are worth reading rather than filing. The declarations page names the insured, lists the vehicles and the drivers, and states every limit and deductible you bought. It is the document that answers "what am I actually covered for", and it is what a court will accept as proof of coverage on a given date.
Check three things the day it arrives: your name matches your license, the vehicle listed is the vehicle you drive, and the drivers listed are the people who actually drive it. Errors found in week one are a phone call. Errors found at a claim are an argument.
Why complete beats optimistic
A quote is only as good as what it was built from. Details that are guessed at get verified later, and the quote changes — which is where nearly every "the price went up" complaint actually starts. Give us the real numbers and the figure we tell you is the figure that issues.

Can I get insured without a Social Security number?
Yes. Carrier applications differ — some accept an ITIN, some ask only for a driver's license number. Nothing in California law makes a Social Security number a condition of buying auto insurance.
Do you need to see my immigration or residency documents?
No. An auto insurance application needs a driver's license number, the drivers in the household, the vehicle, the garaging address and your annual mileage. Residency documents belong to the DMV process, not to ours.
What if I have never had a policy before?
Say so. Insurance Code section 1861.02(c) states that the absence of prior coverage, in and of itself, is not a criterion for eligibility or for your rate. It is a normal starting point, not a problem to work around.
